Headway Announces 3rd Annual Concussion Awareness Week

Headway is thrilled to announce the 3rd annual Concussion Awareness Week January 28 - February 3, 2019.

In February of 2017, Headway launched its inaugural Concussion Awareness Weekend with 24 collegiate participating teams. A year later, in February of 2018, over 100 professional, NCAA, high school, and youth teams participated, including all teams in ECAC Hockey, WCHA, and NCHC. All teams are invited to participate in the 2019 Concussion Awareness Week by clicking the link below.

The goal of the 2019 Concussion Awareness Week is to promote a safer sports culture surrounding concussions through Headway’s ‘New Tough’ Campaign, raise concussion awareness, encourage support for teammates who are out with injuries, and provide educational resources on concussions for student-athletes.

The program differs from other awareness initiatives since Headway relies on a peer-to-peer approach. Headway's team consists of current student-athletes; the program is patient and athlete driven.

The CDC estimates that 69% of student athletes neglect to report possible concussion symptoms and our efforts are geared towards improving those numbers. Concussion Awareness Week provides a platform for professional, collegiate, high school, and youth athletes to unite in creating a positive culture shift in athletes' approach to concussions. We believe this change is an essential first step to improving injury management and making the sports we love safer.

"It is always exciting to see the athletes take initiative and get creative in the ways they raise awareness with their teammates. It's also extremely encouraging to see a genuine eagerness from the student-athletes to learn more about and take ownership of their brain health. I think most athletes have been touched in some way by concussion so the passion is there. We just provide the tools to help facilitate the desired culture change." - Headway Program Development Coordinator, Sarah Renberg
